USN…. so much to Learn. Binnacle List? Gedunk?

“The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States.”  With over 300,000 active members, almost any event you attend, someone also in attendance has probably served or is serving his/her country.  Think about that….  the dedication, the hard work, the sacrifices made by so many.

Every time we see someone in uniform, my children are immediately interested in whatever it is the men and women are doing.  They are full of questions I can not answer which often leads me to “googling” information.  Thank goodness smart phones are more compact than carrying encyclopedias around.

Recently seeing a man in a Navy uniform, and subsequently googling, I learned facts I feel I should know.  And some fun facts, and Navy terms such as Binnacle List and Gedunk (really, it’s a term).

Next time you see a man or woman wearing a uniform, give them a smile, a thank-you, or ask them questions. If you can’t get close enough in person to do so, get online and learn about what they do, or have gone through. It never hurts to educate oneself.  Here’s to all the men and women in the United States Navy, and the families behind them.  It may seem trite, but we appreciate you.
